Physicians urge Americans to be prepared for emergencies
09.01.2010
In honor of September being National Preparedness Month, emergency department physicians throughout the nation are urging the public to have a plan in case an urgent situation arises."Even though a tornado differs from hurricanes, floods, earthquakes or terrorist attacks, many of the ways to prepare are the same," said Angela Gardner, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. "Preparing your family in advance is the best protection in an emergency."
National Preparedness Month is sponsored by the Ready campaign, Citizen Corps and the Advertising Council to promote vigilance in Americans. Nearly 2,700 organizations have joined in the efforts to raise awareness about natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
Doctors are urging people to get a basic survival kit that consists of fresh water and food, and to ensure that families have a place to go for clean air and warmth. These resources should be sufficient to last three days.
Parents and children should sit down together and establish emergency contact numbers, where to go and what to do in an urgent situation. Adults are advised to keep an eye on all types of media, including the TV, radio, websites, newspapers and phones, for information on potential national crises.
