Occupational medicine goals help businesses minimize risk
06.19.2012Businesses operating in certain industries have a major need for developing occupational medicine goals and putting in place policies that enable them to support workplace safety. This is particularly true of the construction industry, where any accident could lead to serious injury or even death.
Ryan Conlin, a lawyer with the firm Stringer Brisbin, told the Daily Commerce News that businesses can sometimes be charged with safety violations even if no accident has occurred. Simply failing to put in place policies that encourage proper workplace safety may be enough for companies to draw the ire of regulators.
Since construction companies work in particularly dangerous fields the need for conducting reviews of safety protocols and developing strategies for reducing accident risk is important for remaining in good standing and avoiding safety violations.
Conlin added that in the event of an accident, businesses that are able to show courts their occupational health policies and demonstrate that workers were trained in these matters are less likely to be on the hook for hefty workers compensation claims. He told the news source that documenting the process is key to reducing liability.
Aside from avoiding having to pay penalties or compensation claims, occupational health goals can help businesses support productivity. The National Library of Medicine reports that a worksite can expose employees to risk from broken bones, hearing and vision problems and illnesses, all of which interfere with productivity.
By putting in place policies that minimize workers' exposure to these risks, businesses can ensure that staff will remain healthy while at the same time avoiding the cost of unnecessary penalties. In this way, developing occupational medicine goals is a beneficial situation for businesses and employees.
