Hospitalist offers tips to guarantee patient satisfaction

09.01.2010

The hospitalist specialty is growing in popularity, and BNET.com reports that as many as 87 percent of medical school graduates choose this profession.

Philip Vaidyan, a doctor based in St. Louis, Missouri, has shared several tips that could help other hospitalists ensure the highest patient satisfaction, according to Becker's Hospital Review.

First, he advises that care providers meet regularly. Frequent communication can help all of the practitioners involved in a patient's care to stay informed and have the most up-to-date information. Vaidyan says that his team of hospitalists has "a hand-off meeting every day at 9 a.m. It [helps] improve staff chemistry because now everybody has a holistic view of a patient. Everything is discussed to better understand EMRs, X-rays, CT scans," quoted by the news source.

He suggested that hospitalists communicate with other leaders within the organization, such as executive personnel, the nutritionist manager or director of the emergency room. This will ensure continuity and clarity when it comes to finances and business development issues.

Physicians should follow up with patients and their primary care doctors following discharge from the hospital. Vaidyan said that because hospitalists are extremely important in the coordination of care, it is their responsibility to build strong relationships with patients to ensure satisfaction.
